Roark's Formulas: Table 8.1-2

Shear, Moment, Slope, and Deflection Formulas for Elastic Straight Beams.

Source: Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain, 9th edition, Table 8.1, pp. 204-206, supplied PDF excerpt. Apparent source errors are identified beside the affected cases.

2. Partial distributed load

The beam has constant EE and II. Coordinate xx runs from the left end AA to the right end BB, with 0≤x≤l0\leq x\leq l. Reactions and deflections are positive upward; slope is positive upward to the right; positive moment compresses the upper fibers. A guided end can translate vertically but cannot rotate.

Macaulay brackets satisfy ⟨x−a⟩n=0{\langle x-a\rangle}^n=0 for x<ax<a and (x−a)n{(x-a)}^n for x>ax>a; the zeroth power is a unit step. Both one-sided limits are included when finding extrema at a jump. Cases with a=0a=0 or a=la=l are interpreted as limits from within the span.

The load varies linearly from waw_a to wlw_l over a≤x≤la\leq x\leq l. The displayed general formulas assume a<la<l; at a=la=l the loaded interval vanishes and the calculator returns zero response.

Beam loading and sign convention for case 2Transverse shear: V=RA−wa⟨x−a⟩−wl−wa2(l−a)⟨x−a⟩2V=R_A-w_a\langle x-a\rangle-\frac{w_l-w_a}{2(l-a)}{\langle x-a\rangle}^2
Bending moment: M=MA+RAx−wa2⟨x−a⟩2−wl−wa6(l−a)⟨x−a⟩3M=M_A+R_Ax-\frac{w_a}{2}{\langle x-a\rangle}^2-\frac{w_l-w_a}{6(l-a)}{\langle x-a\rangle}^3

Deflection: y=yA+θAx+MAx22EI+RAx36EI−wa24EI⟨x−a⟩4−wl−wa120EI(l−a)⟨x−a⟩5y=y_A+\theta_Ax+\frac{M_Ax^2}{2EI}+\frac{R_Ax^3}{6EI}-\frac{w_a}{24EI}{\langle x-a\rangle}^4-\frac{w_l-w_a}{120EI(l-a)}{\langle x-a\rangle}^5

Selected maximum formulas below assume the positive load, couple, imposed displacement, or thermal curvature shown. Signed values are retained. The current-input tables report the minimum, maximum, and greatest absolute value over the span; for negative inputs the signs reverse. A reported position is one location attaining the extremum. The formulas labeled "maximum possible" vary aa while holding the other inputs fixed.
